The #12-ranked Ohio State field hockey team (2-3) was in Cambridge, Mass. Friday to take on the #8 Harvard Crimson (3-0). The Buckeyes were coming off two tough losses the previous weekend, falling at home to #3 Virginia, 1-0, and #11 Syracuse, 2-1, in two overtimes.

On Friday, it was a second straight contest for the Buckeyes that ended up in extra play. Harvard scored with just 2:10 left in the second overtime to take the match, 2-1. It was the 150th win for legendary Crimson head coach Tjerk van Herwaarden, who is in his 13th season at the helm.

The Crimson took the lead with a goal from Martha le Huray with just over a minute left in the first quarter. The Buckeyes tied the match in the third quarter when senior Katie Fichtner scored, with assists going to sophomore Victoria Kutz and freshman Autumn Kernechel on a penalty corner.

The winning goal came in the second extra frame for Harvard. Again, it was le Huray, who was the Ivy League Tournament Most Outstanding Player last season. She knocked in a rebound in front of the Ohio State net. Buckeye goaltender Maddie Stevens, a sophomore, made five saves on the evening, including three in overtime play.

Ohio State remains in the Boston area for their next match. They play Northeastern (3-1) Sunday beginning at noon. The Huskies lost their first match Friday, 6-2, at home against New Hampshire. Sunday’s tilt can be seen on FloCollege.
