The game between the Columbus Clippers and Buffalo Bisons Tuesday at Sahlen Field was a match-up of starting pitchers at the polar opposites of their careers. Columbus’s Austin Peterson, just 25 years old, was making his first Triple-A start, while three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer, 40, was on the mound for the Bisons.

Scherzer threw three innings for the Blue Jays on March 29, but a thumb injury and some back tightness since then have kept him out of Toronto’s lineup. Friday’s start was his first rehab appearance. He threw 56 pitches, going 4.1 innings and allowing two runs on four hits. He left in the fifth inning with the game tied 2-2.

The Clippers’ early runs came on a C.J. Kayfus home run to lead off the second inning and a Kayfus sacrifice fly in the fourth. Columbus made it 5-3 going to the bottom of the ninth after single runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings on a Kyle Datres solo shot, a Kody Huff RBI single, and a passed ball with Yordys Valdes on third.

The Bisons were not to be denied, however, as they came back and scored three times in the bottom of the ninth to walk off with the win. A Riley Tirotta single with the bases loaded gave Buffalo the victory. Columbus reliever Franco Alman (0-2) was charged with the loss. Peterson went five innings, giving up two runs on seven hits.

Game five of the series is set for Saturday with a start time of 6:35 p.m. Both teams now have two wins with two to play. Vince Velasquez (2-1, 3.51) will take the hill for the Clippers Saturday and will face Buffalo’s Andres Tolhurst (1-1, 6.27).
