Thirteen different Columbus Blue Jackets recorded points in their 5-3 win at St. Louis Saturday. It was the Jackets’ fifth straight victory, the ninth in their last 10 outings. They gave up two leads at the Enterprise Center but came back to score the final two goals of the contest to add two more points to their spot in the standings.
St. Louis got on the board first Saturday with a goal from Jimmy Snuggerud at the 7:11 mark of the opening period. Before the first intermission, the Blue Jackets scored twice to take their first lead. Isac Lunderström tied things at 1-1 followed by a tally from Denton Mateychuk, his ninth of the season.
The Blues tied the game at 2-2 with a Jonatan Berggren goal just 3:15 into the middle period. Then the teams traded scores – Kent Johnson on a power play goal for Columbus, Tyler Tucker for St. Louis, and Damon Severson to give the Blue Jackets a 4-3 lead going to the third.
For the second time in as many nights, the Columbus defense did not allow a goal in the third and scored an empty netter, this time from Mason Marchment after St. Louis pulled Jordan Binnington late in the stanza. Jet Greaves picked up the win for the Blue Jackets, stopping 28 of 31 shots on goal.
The win, combined with a New York Islander loss, moved Columbus to within four points of third place in the Metro Division with a game in hand. The Blue Jackets trail the Buffalo Sabres and Boston Bruins, both in the Atlantic Division, by six points for an Eastern Conference wild card spot.
The Jackets get Sunday off after traveling back to Columbus, practice Monday, then head to New Jersey to take on the Devils Tuesday beginning at 7:00 p.m. They conclude their pre-Olympics schedule Wednesday with a home game against the Chicago Blackhawks.
