The Columbus Blue Jackets have been playing “must win” games for nearly a week. That week coincides with the emergence of Jet Greaves as the Blue Jackets’ goaltender. In Philadelphia Tuesday night, Columbus once again faced elimination from the postseason if they lost, but they didn’t lose … again. They beat the Flyers, 3-0, and stayed alive for yet another day.
On Tuesday, both teams had good looks to score in the first period but both netminders, Greaves and Philadelphia’s Samuel Ersson, played well and there were no goals going to the first intermission.
Then, just 2:32 into the second period, Dante Fabbro took a pass at the right point and sent a shot past Ersson on the short side of the net. It was Fabbro’s eighth goal of the season with helpers to Zach Werenski (57) and Sean Monahan (36). At the 17:01 mark of the frame, Kent Johnson added a power play goal, his 24th score of the campaign, with assists – again – to Werenski and Monahan.
The Blue Jackets capped off the scoring when Adam Fantilli scored with 6:34 to go in the contest, just as he came out of the penalty box after a delay of game call. It was Fantilli’s 30th goal this season. He became the second Blue Jackets to reach 30 goals. Kirill Marchenko has recorded 31. The last and only time Columbus had two 30-goal scorers was the 2015-16 season when Brandon Saad (31) and Boone Jenner (30) accomplished it.
Greaves turned away 29 shots to give him his second shutout in three games. The only score he’s allowed in that time was to Alexander Ovechkin, the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer, who scored once during the Blue Jackets’ win Sunday in Washington. Since returning to the Jackets last Thursday, Greaves is 4-0, with those two shutouts, has a goal against average of 0.75 and a save percentage of .976.
The math now is easy. If Montreal beats Carolina at the Bell Centre Wednesday, the Blue Jackets will be eliminated. If the Habs lose in regulation and Columbus beats the New York Islanders in regulation Thursday at home, the Jackets are in. It comes down to the 82nd and final regular season game for both clubs.
