The first time the Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Islanders played this season was at UBS Arena in Elmont, N.Y. on Nov. 2. The Islanders scored twice in the last 1:07 of the game to beat Columbus 3-2. It was a devastating third period loss that seemed to plague the Blue Jackets for weeks after that.
On Sunday night at Nationwide Arena, the Jackets exorcised the demons from the loss on Long Island with a comeback of their own, scoring three times in three and a half minutes late in the final frame to claim a 4-2 win, their second straight.
Columbus has been without its leading scorer, Zach Werenski, for those same two games after he took a shot off his ankle at Anaheim on Dec. 20. His absence has forced others to step up in an effort to stop a streak that saw the Blue Jackets lose seven of eight games before beating the L.A. Kings on Dec. 22.
One of those changing the team’s momentum has been Mason Marchment, who came to Columbus via a trade with Seattle on Dec. 20. The veteran forward has recorded three goals and an assist in three games with his new squad.
Kirill Marchenko elevated his game in the Blue Jackets’ two wins, scoring three goals to give him 13 on the season, just one behind team-leading Werenski. Marchenko’s first goal Sunday came in the first period to give his team a 1-0 lead. His second gave the Blue Jackets the lead for good in the third period.
Columbus found itself behind 2-1 going into the third. The Blue Jackets were relentless in their effort in the final frame, which paid off at the 15:27 mark with a tying goal from Ivan Provorov. Provorov played almost 27 minutes Sunday, pacing Columbus. After Marchenko’s goal 1:14 later, Cole Sillinger added an empty-netter with 1:06 left.
Jet Greaves picked up his tenth win of the season, stopping 24 of 26 shots (92.3%). It was the third win in his last four starts. He now has a save percentage of 90.7% and a goals against average of 2.66/game.
The Blue Jackets will jump on a plane right away heading north of the border. They play the second of back-to-back games against the Ottawa Senators Monday. The puck is slated to drop at Canadian Tire Centre at 7:00 p.m.
