After being forced to stay in Chicago because of the weather, the Colorado Avalanche didn’t arrive in Columbus until Thursday afternoon on game day. That delay had very little impact on the Avs as they scored the final five goals of the game against the Columbus Blue Jackets to rally for a 7-3 win.
Colorado took a 2-1 lead after a period of play. The Columbus goal came from Sean Monahan, who chipped in a rebound off a Dante Fabbro shot from the point. The CBJ score was bookended by goals from Nathan McKinnon and Brock Nelson.
The second period saw the Blue Jackets take a 3-2 lead. First, it was an unassisted goal by Zach Aston-Reese. Then, Boone Jenner scored his eighth goal of the season. He now has 18 points in the 18 games that he’s played since returning from a shoulder injury suffered in the last practice before the season started.
After Jenner’s goal, it was all Colorado. The Avalanche scored the next five goals without a response from the Blue Jackets, three in the second period, two in the third. Columbus goalie Elvis Merzlikins was pulled after the seventh goal, giving way to Daniil Tarasov with 14:11 left to play.
The Blue Jackets have nine games left in the regular season. Their loss and Montreal’s victory against Boston Thursday put them four points out of the second wild card spot in the NHL’s Eastern Conference. Next up, the Jackets have back-to-back road games this Saturday and Sunday against Toronto and Ottawa, respectively.
