It was a tall order for the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday. They were playing the second of back-to-back games on the road in Ottawa. They were coming off an emotional, taxing shootout victory at home on Friday, while the Senators had won seven of their last 10 games.
Ottawa took a 2-1 lead after a period of play. Ridley Grieg and Drake Batherson scored for the Sens with a goal from Blue Jackets’ captain Boone Jenner in-between. For Jenner, it was his fifth goal in the team’s last four games. And it was a signature Jenner goal, knocking home a rebound off a Zach Werenski shot from the point.
The Senators added a goal in the second when Jake Anderson chipped the puck past Daniil Tarasov from the left post. Going to the second intermission, Ottawa led 3-1. The Blue Jackets managed only four shots on goal in the second period. That would change in the third.
The Jackets found their attack coming out of the locker room, but weren’t able to score until Kirill Marchenko took a pass from Zach Werenski and drove down the slot to beat Ottawa goalie Linus Ullmark. After that, the Blue Jackets, who recorded 15 shots in the third period, blitzed Ullmark but could not find the net. The Sens held on for a 3-2 win.
With the loss, Columbus slipped from the second wild card spot. The idle Montreal Canadiens took the spot on a tie-breaker with the Jackets. Columbus returns to Nationwide Arena for a Tuesday matchup with the Nashville Predators beginning at 7:00 p.m.
