The Columbus Blue Jackets started yet another extended road trip Tuesday, traveling to San Jose to take on Macklin Celebrini and the Sharks. The Blue Jackets battled from behind all night, getting to within a goal late in the third period before two empty-netters sealed the game for the Sharks, 5-2.

Columbus, like most of the NHL, has been dealing with a slew of injuries. The lineup has been a revolving door of existing players and newly-signed talent. The Blue Jackets did not have Mason Marchment Tuesday, who has been a scoring machine since his debut with the team seven games ago. They were also without Miles Wood.

On the positive side, veteran Sean Monahan was back on the ice after missing four games. All of this in-and-out forced head coach Dean Evason to adjust his forward lines while also dealing with a late start time after a cross-country plane ride.

The Sharks took a 2-0 lead after Pavol Regenda’s first-period goal and former Jacket Alexander Wennberg’s second-period score. Zach Werenski posted a goal with just 45 seconds left in the middle frame to get his squad back into contention. Werenski leads Columbus with 16 goals.

The teams traded scores late in the third period with Monahan getting on the board to push the Blue Jackets to within a goal at 3-2. The Sharks posted two empty-net scores after that, one from Mario Ferrero, the other from Celebrini. It was Celebrini’s 23rd of the season.

Jet Greaves started his seventh game in a row in the Columbus net. He stopped 31 of 34 shots for a .912 save percentage. He now has a save percentage of .910 for the season and a goals against average of 2.65.

The second of the Blue Jackets’ four-game trip comes on Thursday when they stop in Nevada to do battle with the Vegas Golden Knights. The opening face-off is set for 10:00 p.m. EST.
