The Columbus Blue Jackets faced a number of obstacles at Ottawa Monday night. Their flight wasn’t able to leave until Monday afternoon, pushing the start time back. They were without injured veterans Zach Werenski and Sean Monahan. It was the second game of a back-to-back.
None of it mattered. The Blue Jackets scored twice before the Senators got on the board, then scored twice more to capture their third straight win, 4-1. Columbus goaltender Jet Greaves, who picked up the victory Sunday at Nationwide Arena, stopped 27 of 28 shots (.964) for his 11th win of the season.
Columbus scored in the first period when Boone Jenner took a no-look pass from Cole Sillinger in front of the net and poked it home. In the second frame, Damon Severson converted on a 96-mph slap shot from above the right circle. Before the end of the period, Jake Sanderson scored the Senators’ only goal.
As they did the night before, the Blue Jackets controlled the third period, this time scoring twice and playing stellar defense. Denton Mateychuk ripped a shot off the post and into the net from the slot just inside the blue line. Kirill Marchenko sealed the win with his 14th goal of the season, tying him for the team lead.
The Blue Jackets now have two days, if needed, to get home for a New Year’s Eve game at Nationwide Arena with the New Jersey Devils. The teams opened the month of December in Newark and the Jackets came away with a 5-3 road victory.
