On Tuesday, the Columbus Blue Jackets played their last game before this season’s NHL break for the Winter Olympic Games. They faced the Chicago Blackhawks at Nationwide Arena and came away with a 4-0 victory, their seventh consecutive win, the 11th in their last 12 outings.
Columbus goaltender Jet Greaves earned his second shutout of the season, stopping 21 Chicago shots. It follows the shutout recorded the night before at New Jersey from netmate Elvis Merzlikins. Combined with a third period in the win at St. Louis Saturday, the Blue Jackets have posted seven straight scoreless periods.
It was the first time in team history that the Jackets had two different goalies record shutouts on back-to-back nights. The last time it happened in the NHL was in the 2022-23 season when Stuart Skinner and Jack Campbell accomplished the feat for the Edmonton Oilers.
The Columbus goals Wednesday came from four different players. Zach Werenski, who leads NHL defensemen in goals and points, scored his team-high 20th goal to get the Blue Jackets on the board in the first period. Fellow blue liner Ivan Provorov added an opening stanza tally.
Danton Heinen, who was moved up to the Blue Jackets top line with some of his teammates suffering from the flu and being nicked up, scored the lone goal of the second period at the 5:17 mark. The final score came on an empty-netter from Sean Monahan on a breakaway in the third.
With the win, Columbus has amassed 22 of a possible 24 points over their last 12 games. That has taken them from last place in the Eastern Conference to two points out of third place in the Metro Division.
The Blue Jackets will now take some time off and watch their teammates Zach Werenski and Elvis Merzlikins play for the United States and Latvian Olympic hockey squads, respectively. The team resumes practice on February 18th before taking on the Bruins in Boston on the 26th.
