The Columbus Blue Jackets waited too long to get going Thursday night, and a pair of third-period goals couldn’t erase the damage in a 3-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Jordan Martinook, Logan Stankoven, and Mark Jankowski each scored for the Hurricanes, who were up 1-0 after the first period and 2-0 through 40 minutes. Jankowski’s goal in the opening seconds of the third put Carolina up 3-0 before the Blue Jackets really got to work.
Denton Mateychuk scored for the third straight game to get Columbus on the board with just over 13 minutes left in regulation, and for the third time in two games, Kent Johnson added a power play goal less than three minutes after Mateychuk’s tally.
After the game, forward Charlie Coyle said the Blue Jackets need to play an entire game as they did in the third period.
“We just can’t wait until we’re down and our backs are against a wall,” he said. “We gotta show it from the start and give ourselves our best chance to have a complete game. I don’t know if we’ve showed that this year yet, honestly.”
Goalie Pyotr Kochetkov made 24 saves for the Hurricanes and remains undefeated in net this season at 9-0-0.
Jet Greaves, who sat behind Cam Talbot in the last two games and saw his first action in nine days, also made 24 saves.
Here’s how the Blue Jackets dipped back below .500 (5-6-0) Thursday night in Raleigh:
CAR: 1, CBJ: 0 (1ST PERIOD, 4:09 REMAINING)
Carolina opens the scoring after Jarvis carries the puck into the Columbus zone and moves it to Martinook, who finds himself with room to shoot in the left circle. Martinook fires a wrist shot that goes off the stick of Erik Gudbranson before going past Greaves, giving the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead.
CAR: 2, CBJ: 0 (2ND PERIOD, 12:13 REMAINING)
The Hurricanes doubled their lead with another goal off the rush. Columbus can’t slow Carolina down in the neutral zone as Nikolaj Ehlers moves the puck to Stankoven, who quickly carries it into the Blue Jackets’ zone and finds some room to work with. With the Columbus defense unable to close the gap fast enough, Stankoven takes advantage of the space and fires a wrister past Greaves to make it 2-0.
CAR: 3, CBJ: 0 (3RD PERIOD, 19:44 REMAINING)
After getting control of the puck in the first few seconds of the third period, Carolina wastes no time. Jarvis outmaneuvers Damon Severson and spots Jankowski waiting in front of the crease, then makes a perfect pass to him. Jankowski flips it in and the Hurricanes go up 3-0.

The Hurricanes are one of the better teams in the league defending along the boards but Columbus outworks them here to get on the board for the first time. Sean Monahan plays the puck in one corner and gets it to Jake Christiansen in the other corner. Christiansen sees Mateychuk skating in near the high slot and dishes the puck his way, with Mateychuk beating Kochetkov to cut the Blue Jackets’ deficit to 3-1.

Less than three minutes after getting one back, the Blue Jackets get another back to make it interesting. Adam Fantilli wins a key faceoff to start a Columbus power play and within six seconds, it’s in the back of the net. Coyle has plenty of space near the goal line and sees Johnson at the post. He sends the puck towards the net and it deflects off Johnson’s skate for the goal, making it a 3-2 game.
QUICK THOUGHTS: An admirable effort in the final 19:40 of the game, but not enough to undo falling behind 3-0 in the opening seconds of the third. Columbus needs to find that energy and harness it nightly. If they can play that way consistently, they’re going to be in the race for a playoff spot all season.
Johnson continues to dazzle. His confidence is really showing and he’s matched last season’s goal total (in 76 games) before Halloween. There is a path to a top line of Matthew Knies, Fantilli, and Johnson being a dominant force for many seasons to come if KJ continues to play this way.
This was another game where the veterans couldn’t find the scoring touch. The Blue Jackets have gone three straight games without a goal by a forward other than Johnson or Fantilli, and have just one — a Coyle goal last Tuesday in a 6-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs — over the last six games. Not good.
NEXT UP: The three-game road trip concludes on Halloween night in Texas. Puck-drop Saturday against the Dallas Stars is set for 8:00 p.m.
