Coming into their home game against the Washington Capitals Saturday, the Columbus Blue Jackets had four games left in the regular season and knew they had to win them all to have a chance at the postseason. The Blue Jackets fought off elimination once again with a 7-0 victory.
The Capitals were without Alex Ovechkin, who stayed back in D.C. to rest after becoming the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer. Washington also opted to give goaltender Hunter Shepard his first start this season after being called up from the AHL’s Hershey Bears.
The Blue Jackets got on the board right away when Zach Werenski scored his 21st goal of the season just a minute into the contest. At the 4:45 mark, Kent Johnson made a nifty move to create space in front of the Capitals’ net and knocked the puck home, his 23rd of the season.

The third goal of the first period for the Jackets showed the impressive 200-foot game of Adam Fantilli. The sequence started in front of the Columbus goal when Fantilli went in to slap the puck out of the slot. A split second later, he knocked Ryan Leonard to the ice with a big hit. He then made his way down the ice and scored on a great pass from Kent Johnson with just 36 seconds remaining in the period.
It took a few minutes for Leonard to collect himself and make his way off the ice and down the tunnel. As he exited, Washington veteran Tom Wilson told the officials what he thought of the play and earned a 10-minute misconduct penalty. That exchange and the events on the ice set the stage for even more physical action in the second period.
Fantilli scored again just 2:01 into the second. Sean Monahan added a goal two and a half minutes, followed by a score just 37 seconds later from Cole Sillinger. Temperatures got even hotter following the three goals in the second frame that made it 6-0, Blue Jackets.
The physical play turned into fisticuffs when Sean Kuraly tangled with Leonard, then James van Riemsdyk went at it with Rasmus Sandin. Everyone in attendance waited to see if the teams’ two enforcers, Mathieu Olivier for Columbus and Wilson for Washington, would face off. There was discussion between the two but ultimately nothing more.

In the third period, Columbus added its final goal when van Riemskyk took a perfect pass from Olivier in the slot and beat Shepard. When lumped together with his assists on the Kent Johnson and first Fantilli goals and his fight with Sandin, it gave van Riemsdyk the “Gordie Howe” hat trick.
One of the stranger happenings occurred later in the third. Columbus’s Dmitri Voronkov and Washington’s Pierre-Luc DuBois exchanged shoves along the board’s in the Blue Jackets’ zone. Both received misconduct penalties. Somehow, Voronkov found his way back onto the ice less than two minutes later. When the officials noticed, Voronkov received a minor penalty and was told again not to return.
The 7-0 win was the first NHL shutout for Columbus goaltender Jet Grieves. Grieves won his second straight game after being called up Thursday from the Cleveland Monsters after Elvis Merzlikins suffered an upper body injury. He had also won a game in Cleveland Wednesday night, giving him three victories in four days.
The Blue Jackets head to Washington for a game Sunday with the Capitals. The puck is scheduled to drop at 6:00 p.m. at Capital One Arena. Columbus fans will be watching the Montreal at Toledo game Saturday night. A win by the Canadiens will eliminate the Blue Jackets from the playoffs.
