The Columbus Blue Jackets traveled to Pittsburgh Saturday for the fourth and final game against the Penguins this regular season. All of the previous three matchups went to extra time, with Pittsburgh winning at Columbus twice in the overtime period, while the Blue Jackets won in Pittsburgh in a shootout.

True to form, the contest went past regulation, with Columbus winning on a shootout attempt by Charlie Coyle to capture the victory, 4-3. So each team came away from the series with six points. For Columbus, the win was their fourth straight, three in a row for new head coach Rick Bowness.

The Blue Jackets had two leads in regulation. Zach Aston-Reese scored just 2:32 into the game to give Columbus a 1-0 lead. Later in the period, the Penguins scored twice, on goals from Connor Clifton and Rickard Rakell, to take a one-goal lead into the first intermission.

Columbus righted the ship in the second period and retook the lead on scores from Kirill Marchenko and Danton Heinen. Marchenko now has 18 goals to match Zach Werenski for the team lead. That lead was erased with 1:01 left in the third period when Sidney Crosby once again broke the Blue Jackets’ hearts with a chip in.

Crosby’s 26th goal of the season sent the game to overtime. Neither team scored in the extra frame to necessitate a shootout. In addition to Coyle’s game-winner, Kent Johnson scored right out of the gate for Columbus. The only good attempt for the Pens came from former Blue Jacket Yegor Chinakhov.

Columbus returns home for a game with Ottawa on Tuesday. The puck drops at 7:00 p.m. at Nationwide Arena.
