This weekend went well for the Ohio State baseball team (29-23, 18-12 B1G). The Buckeyes swept their three-game series against the Michigan Wolverines (33-22, 17-13 B1G) in Ann Arbor for the first time since 1994. The sweep allowed OSU to leapfrog the Wolverines into 6th place in the final Big Ten regular season standings.
The series started Thursday with the Buckeyes scoring eight runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 13-2 lead. When Michigan couldn’t counter in the bottom of the frame, the game ended because of the margin. Noah Burcht and Dane Harvey each hit two home runs for OSU and starter Pierce Herrenbruck earned his sixth win.
On Friday, Ohio State fell behind 2-1 after two innings, but rallied to claim a 7-3 victory. Grant Mangrum hit the Buckeyes’ sole long ball in the contest. Leadoff hitter Alex Bemis knocked in two runs, while Henry Kaczmar doubled and had an RBI. Gavin Kuzniewski went the first six innings and picked up the victory.
The series finale saw the Buckeyes take an early lead, scoring four runs in the first inning. They scored four more, including three runs in the ninth to win going away, 8-1. Lee Ellis cleared the bases with a double in the opening frame. Maddix Simpson added two RBIs.Â
Starting pitcher Chris Domke had a spectacular outing Saturday. The junior from North Royalton allowed one run on three hits while striking out six. Most important, he went all nine innings. It was the first nine-inning complete game in five years for an Ohio State hurler.
Next up for the Buckeyes is the Big Ten Tournament, which will be held at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska. The tournament runs from Tuesday, May 19 through Sunday, May 24.Â
