The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team continued its incredible season with an 11-7 win over Rutgers Thursday in a Big Ten tournament semi-final game in Ann Arbor, Mich. The #5-ranked Buckeyes won the Big Ten regular season title with a win at Michigan on April 19. For the tourney championship, they’ll need to beat Maryland Saturday.
OSU trailed the Scarlet Knights twice in the opening quarter of play Thursday, but led 3-2 when the quarter ended. The Bucks did not trail after that thanks to an impressive defensive effort. On the offensive side, they got a first-quarter hat trick from their leading scorer, Alex Marinier. Gannon Matthews also scored three goals on the day.
The Ohio State defense played consistently, not allowing Rutgers to put together a sustained rally. By quarter, the Knights scored two, zero, three, and two goals. Buckeye goalkeeper Caleb Fyock had another stellar performance, stopping 14 shots to post twice as many saves as goals allowed.
On the other side of the bracket, Maryland beat Penn State, 10-8, Thursday to earn the right to tangle with the Buckeyes in the title game. Ohio State fell to the Terrapins, 13-8, in Columbus on April 19 in regular-season play. It was one of only two losses for the Buckeyes this season.
The game Saturday will begin at 8:00 p.m. and can be seen on the Big Ten Network.
