The Ohio State field hockey team (5-5, 1-1) has been involved in four overtime games in their 10 outings this season. On Friday, the Buckeyes got their first win in extra time, downing the visiting Maryland Terrapins (6-4, 2-1) by the final score of 2-1. The Terps were ranked 11th in the country coming into the contest.
Neither team was able to score in the opening two quarters. Ohio State got on the board first when Raleigh Kerst posted a goal five minutes into the second half. It was unassisted. Maryland tied the score with a goal from Annemijn Klijnhout early in the fourth quarter with a helper from Callie Rogers.
The Buckeyes grabbed their first OT win when Makenna Webster rushed the goal. Webster’s pass, intended to go across the front of the cage, caromed right back to her and she poked it into the net as she dived forward. It was Webster’s team-leading 15th goal of the season, one more than the rest of the team combined.
Ohio State is right back at it with another Big Ten home tilt Sunday against the Penn State Nittany Lions (5-5, 0-3). The action begins at noon and can be seen on the Big Ten+ network. Penn State fell at Michigan Friday, 2-1.
