The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team (12-2, 4-1) scored the final five goals in their game at Michigan (7-6, 3-2) Saturday to beat the Wolverines, 10-8, and claim their first Big Ten title. The Buckeyes started Big Ten play in 2015 after being a member of the ECAC Lacrosse League (2010-2013) and the Great Western Lacrosse League (1998-2009).
OSU led at halftime, 3-2, in a defensive struggle. Michigan went up, 8-5, midway through the fourth quarter. The Buckeyes rebounded, scoring five times in the final 5:23 to win by two goals.
Senior Gannon Matthews paced the Bucks with three goals. Sophomore Garrett Haas and senior Ed Shean added two goals each. Sophomore Caleb Fyock turned away 12 of the 20 shots he faced to earn his twelfth victory of the campaign.
The Buckeyes will get a bye as the top seed in the Big Ten tournament to be hosted in Ann Arbor, Mich. On Thursday, May 1 at 5:00 p.m., OSU will play the winner of the Rutgers/Michigan game in the semi-finals. Maryland, the only team to beat the Buckeyes in Big Ten play, is the #2 seed.
The winner of the Big Ten Tournament will earn the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Championship. The brackets will be announced live on ESPN2 at 9:30 p.m. on May 4.
