The Ohio State softball team (30-9-1, 6-4) was in Southern California for a two-game set with the UCLA Bruins (36-5, 9-1) this weekend. In the opener on Friday, UCLA scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to shorten the game, winning 14-6. Saturday’s game went the distance, but the Buckeyes fell 7-0.
In Friday’s game, Ohio State took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on solo home runs from Sami Bewick and Jasmyn Burns. The Bruins countered with eight runs in the home second and never looked back. Burns added another home run in the third inning and a sacrifice fly in the fifth to drive in four runs on the day.
In the game on Saturday, the Buckeyes were held to just one hit, a single from Taylor Cruse. UCLA hurler Taylor Tinsley allowed just three OSU baserunners in her complete game shutout. It was a 1-0 game until the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Bruins plated six runs to take control of the contest.
The Buckeyes are in Pennsylvania for their next four games. They play a non-conference tilt at Pitt Wednesday, then get back into Big Ten action with a three-game series against the Penn State Nittany Lions over the weekend.
