A week after beating Texas, 14-7, in a dominating performance for the Ohio State defense, but a conservatively-called offense, head coach Ryan Day and his staff took the harness off the playcalling Saturday. What resulted was a 70-0 win over Grambling State at the Shoe.
Buckeye quarterback Julian Sayin, who was asked to manage the offense in week one, put together an impressive performance in just one half against the Tigers. He completed his first 16 passes and ended the day 18 of 19 for 306 yards and four touchdowns. Sayin’s start eclipsed the mark of Will Howard set last year of 13 straight completions to start a game.
Ohio State spread both receiving yards (377) and rushing yards (274) around its personnel. Both Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate caught five passes, with Smith amassing 119 yards and two touchdowns. Tate had 69 yards and one score. Tight ends Will Kacmarek and Jelani Thurman also reeled in touchdowns.
On the ground, one Buckeye reached the century mark with Bo Jackson gaining 108 yards on nine carries (12.0) and a touchdown. C.J. Donaldson, Isaiah West, and Sam Dixon also scored rushing TDs. All in all, the Bucks averaged 7.2/yards on 38 carries.
Next up for Ohio State is an intra-state contest with the Ohio University Bobcats (1-1). OU beat West Virginia in Athens Saturday, 17-10. In week one, the Bobcats fell at Rutgers, 34-31. The ‘Cats are led by grad quarterback Parker Navarro, who guided them to a MAC championship last season. Game time Saturday is 7:00 p.m. at Ohio Stadium and can be seen on Peacock.
