Forget that the team you’re facing is your arch-nemesis. Forget that you’re battling a conference opponent. If you win both games of a doubleheader in your last at-bat, that’s just plain exciting. That’s exactly what the Ohio State softball team did Friday, coming from behind in both games to beat the Michigan Wolverines, 4-3 and 7-4.
In game one, the Buckeyes found themselves behind 3-2 going to the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Skylar Limon hit a two-run home run to put the Bucks on top 4-3. Starting pitcher Lorin Boutte, who went all seven innings for OSU, retired the side in order in the seventh to record her 16th win of the season.
The nightcap also required the Buckeyes to rally to get the win. Trailing 4-0 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, Limon hit another home run, a solo shot, to get OSU on the board. Ohio State tied the score at 4-4 in the sixth inning when Jasmyn Burns led off the inning with a long ball. Then, with two outs, Kaitlyn Farley went deep with a runner aboard.
Still tied in the bottom of the seventh inning, Limon bunted her way aboard to start the inning. Taylor Cruse bunted after that and reached on a throwing error that allowed both runners to move up. Hadley Parisien brought everyone around to score on her blast to center field.
Kennedy Kay picked up her 10th win of the campaign, going 6.1 innings, allowing four runs on nine hits and striking out three. Kassandra Gewecke got the final two outs in the top of the seventh before the Buckeyes broke the tie in the bottom of the inning.
The teams played the first two game of their three-game series as a doubleheader on Friday because of expected bad weather Saturday. They wind up the series with a single game Sunday in Columbus at 1:00 p.m.
