The #1-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes (4-0, 1-0) traveled to Seattle Saturday to take on the Washington Huskies (3-1, 0-1) in the first Big Ten game for both teams. The Buckeyes started slowly, but came away with a 24-6 win.
The Buckeyes had a good chance to score in the first quarter but a 4th-and-one C.J. Donaldson run was stuffed by the Huskies at their five-yard line. Ohio State looked to have great field position on their next possession, but Brandon Inniss fumbled at the end of a 32-yard punt return and Washington took possession at the Husky 21.
Washington then drove 69 yards to the OSU 10-yard line, but was forced to kick a 28-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead. Jonah Coleman, who led the Huskies with 70 yards rushing, had a 34-yard run during the drive.
After stopping the Huskies on downs at its 27-yard line, Ohio State went 73 yards on 10 plays and scored with 1:08 remaining in the second quarter. Julian Saying hit Jeremiah Smith on an 18-yard pass and the Buckeyes took a 7-3 lead to the locker room at halftime.
After receiving the kickoff to begin the second half, Ohio State drove 75 yards and scored on a one-yard Donaldson run. Washington responded with a long drive but again kicked a field goal after its drive stalled at the OSU 10-yard line.
The Buckeyes put the game away with 10 points in the fourth quarter. Jayden Fielding hit a 34-yard field goal and Sayin threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Donaldson for the 24-6 victory.
Sayin finished the day 22-28 for 208 yards and two touchdowns. Smith led the Buckeyes with eight receptions for 81 yards and a score. Bo Jackson had a team-leading 80 yards rushing.
Caden Curry paced the Buckeye defense with 11 tackles, nine of them solo stops. He recorded three sacks and five tackles for loss. Kayden McDonald added seven tackles, two sacks, and three TFLs.
The Bucks return to Ohio Stadium next Saturday to host the Minnesota Gophers (3-1, 1-0) with the kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m. Minnesota beat Rutgers, 31-28, in Minneapolis Saturday to begin Big Ten play.
