Autzen Stadium will host Saturday’s contest between Ohio State and host Oregon.
The #2-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes (5-0, 2-0) travel to Eugene to play the #3-ranked Oregon Ducks (5-0, 2-0) Saturday. It will be the first time that the teams have played as Big Ten members.
In week two of the season, the Ducks hit a field goal with no time left on the clock to beat Boise State 37-34 in a non-conference contest. Their two Big Ten wins came the last two weeks against UCLA and Michigan State.
The Buckeyes have yet to be tested, including their Big Ten victories over Michigan State and Iowa the past two weeks. OSU’s defense ranks number one in the country in points allowed (6.8) and total yards per game (202.4).
Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel played three years at the University of Central Florida before transferring to Oklahoma for two years. Gabriel entered the portal at the end of last season. So far this season, he is 130-157 passing with 1,449. He has 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Junior Jordan James leads the rushing attack for the Ducks. James has run for 552 yards and five touchdowns on 88 carries this season (6.8 average). Last week, he recorded 166 yards on 24 carries (6.9 average). Senior Tez Johnson is Oregon’s leading receiver with 395 yards and five TDs yards on 43 catches (9.2 average).
Senior linebacker Bryce Boettcher leads the Ducks’ defense with 32 tackles and an interception. The Eugene native is also a standout on the Oregon baseball team as a Gold Glove-winning centerfielder. Sophomore Matayo Uiagalelei leads the Ducks with 3.5 sacks, while Michigan State-transfer Derrick Harmon has recorded 3.0 sacks.
This will be a homecoming of sorts for Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, who was the head coach at Oregon for four years, 2009-12 (46-7). Kelly took the Ducks to the 2011 BCS title game, falling to Auburn 22-19. After leaving Eugene, he has returned three times to Autzen Stadium as the head coach at UCLA.
ESPN GameDay will be in Eugene Saturday morning. The Buckeyes are 41-19 in GameDay contests. Their 41 wins are the most of any program in the country. The game will be broadcast on NBC and 97.1 The Fan at 7:35 p.m. EDT
