The Columbus Clippers’ offense is down a bit in July, but their relief corps has kept them in ballgames. That theme played out again Sunday as the Clippers beat the Louisville Bats on the road, 5-2, to win the rubber match of their three-game series.
Triston McKenzie started on the mound for Columbus and gave up two runs in his four innings of work, allowing only two hits but walking seven. In the first two innings, he escaped real damage with a double play from his defense in each frame.
Randy Labaut (3-6) came out of the bullpen in the fifth and tossed two shutout innings to earn the win. After that, Tanner Gillispie and Anthony Gose threw scoreless innings to record holds. Tanner Walton went a perfect ninth, including two strikeouts, to pick up his fourth save of the season.
The Clippers’ bats did do damage early in the contest against Louisville starter Brandon Leibrandt (1-2), putting five runs on the board in the first three innings. Leibrandt was charged with the loss.
In the second inning, Johnathan Rodriguez and Gabriel Arias singled with Rodriguez moving to third base. Bryan Lavastida, who was back in the lineup after taking a ball off his hand at catcher in an earlier series, grounded into a double play with Rodriguez scoring.
In the third, the Clippers plated four runs. A walk and two singles loaded the bases for Juan Brito, who singled and drove in two. After a balk moved runners to second and third later in the frame, Rodriguez singled to knock in two more.
The Clippers get Monday off, then begin a long 12-game homestand. On Tuesday, they start a six-game series with Memphis. The first pitch is set for 5:05 p.m.
