It had a been a long week for the Columbus Clippers in Des Moines. Games with the Iowa Cubs scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday had been postponed because rains had made the grounds at Principal Park unplayable. Starting Thursday, the teams played five games in three days.
On Sunday, in the series finale, the Clippers scored the first seven runs of the game, before giving up two to the Cubs in the ninth, to post a 7-2 victory. In his second Triple-A start, Ryan Webb (1-0) recorded his first win for Columbus. He blanked Iowa for 5.2 innings, allowing only one hit and two walks while striking out four.
On the offensive side, Myles Straw paced the Clippers with two hits, an RBI, and two runs scored. In the seventh inning, Straw stole second, then home on a double steal. Columbus swiped four bases on the day, but were caught twice.
Veteran Adrian Houser, who the Chicago Cubs picked up at the end of June after the New York Mets released him, had a good outing but was charged with the loss (0-1). In 6.2 innings of work, he allowed just one run on two hits and one walk, striking out three. It was his first decision in three outings with Iowa.
After two weeks on the road, the Clippers return to Huntington Park Tuesday to open a six-game series against Indianapolis. Columbus last saw the Indians in early July at Victory Field and took four out of five games. The first pitch Tuesday is set for 6:15 p.m.
