What a difference a day makes. On Saturday, the Columbus Clippers prevailed in a pitchers duel, 2-1, over the visiting Toledo Mud Hens. In the series finale Sunday, Toledo scored four runs in the top of the first inning, more than both teams combined the day before. The Clippers played catch-up all day, ultimately falling, 11-9.
The starting pitchers for both teams did battle twice in the series. On Tuesday, Columbus’s Vince Velasquez and Toledo’s Wilkel Hernandez went head-to-head with Velasquez earning the win, Hernandez the loss, in the Clippers’ 6-1 victory. Velasquz suffered the loss this time around, but Hernandez did not figure into the decision.
After the Mud Hens scored four in the first inning, Columbus responded with four runs of their own in the third. With two outs in the frame, Chase DeLauter doubled to knock in a run. Later in the inning, Kody Huff doubled to clear the loaded bases. Both DeLauter and Huff would combine to add three RBIs with doubles in the eighth.
The Clippers’ bullpen allowed no runs in eight innings of work on Saturday. On Sunday, the relievers allowed six scores in 5.2 innings, after Velasquez (2-2) gave up five runs, only two earned because of two Columbus errors. Toledo reliever P.J. Pouline (4-1) picked up the win, while Ricky Vanasco pitched a perfect ninth for his first save.
The Clippers get Monday off before beginning a six-game series at Buffalo Tuesday with the first pitch set for 6:35 p.m. Aaron Davenport (0-0, 8.68) will take the hill for Columbus.
