After winning 5-3 in their opening game at Toledo Monday, the Columbus Clippers lost 5-2 to the Mud Hens Wednesday at Fifth Third Field.
Toledo jumped out to a 5-0 lead after a three-run sixth inning. The Clippers cut the deficit to three when Angel Martínez hit a two-run homer in the seventh, his sixth bomb of the season. Martínez finished the game with three hits to pace the Clips.
Two Nicks had solid performances for Columbus out of the bullpen. Nick Mikolajchak, coming off a season away in 2023 because of an injury, tossed 1.1 shutout innings. He has a 2.00 ERA in 17 relief appearances this season. On a rehab assignment from Cleveland, Nick Sandlin threw a shutout inning in his first game with the Clippers.
Detroit Tigers’ infielder Javier Báez, in his first rehab game with the Mud Hens, had two hits as the designated hitter. Shortstop Andrew Navigato also had two hits for Toledo and drove in a run.
Bryan Sammons (5-4) went five scoreless innings for the Hens, walking three and striking out six. Sean Guenther picked up his third save of the season, throwing a perfect ninth.
Starter Randy Labaut (2-6) was charged with the loss, lasting only 2.2 innings and allowing two runs on three hits and five walks. Besides Mikolajchak and Sandlin, Mason Hickman and Adam Oller each tossed a scoreless inning of relief. John Doxakis allowed three runs on three hits and four walks in his inning of work.
The Clips and Mud Hens are back at it Wednesday in Toledo with a 7:05pm start. After Wednesday’s contest, the teams begin a three-game series at Huntington Park Thursday, with games on Friday and Saturday as well.
