Usually the term “pitchers’ duel” connotes a battle between two starters. In the Columbus Clippers’ game at Gwinnett Friday, it applied to both clubs’ pitching staffs. The Stripers’ hurlers were one run better, as Gwinnett won 2-1 on a walk-off single in the ninth inning.

Connor Gillispie and Drue Hackenberg started on the mound for the Clippers and Stripers, respectively, but neither figured into the decision. Gillispie went 4.2 innings for Columbus and did not allow a run. Hackenberg gave up the Clippers one run on four hits in his six innings of work.

The Gwinnet bullpen, namely Zach Logue and Domingo Gonzalez, did not allow a hit for the final three innings of the game. Gonzalez (2-2) earned the win, nailing down the final two outs in the ninth. The loss went to Andrew Misiaszek (2-1), his first of the season. He gave up a one-out walk-off single to pinch hitter Brian Anderson in the ninth.

Friday’s contest was the fourth of the teams’ six-game series. All have been decided by one run, with the Clippers taking the first three games. Columbus and Gwinnett will be back at it Saturday with a 6:05 p.m. start.  Joey Cantillo (1-1) will be on the mound for the Clippers and will face Bryce Elder (9-3) for the Stripers.
