The Columbus Clippers began a six-game series in Omaha Tuesday. The Storm Chasers took advantage of two big innings to down the Clips, 9-3. Before the game, Columbus promoted outfielder Will Brennan and relief pitcher Zak Kent to the Cleveland Guardians and welcomed shortstop Brayan Rocchio back to the club.
Omaha took the lead Tuesday with a run in the second inning. The Clippers responded with a run in the fourth when Yordys Valdes singled to drive in Johnathan Rodriguez. The Storm Chasers retook the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single and a Columbus throwing error.
The big blow for Omaha came in the sixth. After one run was in, Cam Devanney went deep for a grand slam to put his team up 9-1. Columbus added two runs in the seventh. Rocchio drove in a run with a single. Then, Rodriguez singled to record his fourteenth RBI of the season.
Columbus starter Ryan Webb (2-2) earned the loss allowing three runs, one of them earned, on three hits and five walks in 3.2 innings of work. Andrew Walters, Luis Frías, and Nick Mikolajchak all three at least an inning of scoreless relief. Omaha starter Chandler Champlain (1-1) picked up his first win of the campaign.
Also joining the Clippers for Tuesday’s contest was outfielder Lane Thomas on a rehab assignment from the Guardians. Thomas suffered a wrist injury in Cleveland’s opener this season, which he re-aggrevated on April 22. The 29-year-old was traded to Cleveland from Washington last July for three prospects: pitcher Alex Clemmey, shortstop Rafael Ramirez Jr., and infielder José Tena.
Omaha and Columbus play the second game of their series Wednesday at Werner Park beginning at 7:35 p.m. Doug Nikhazy (1-2, 4.68) will take the hill for the Clippers and will face Thomas Hatch (1-2, 5.51).
