Because of the Memorial Day holiday, the Columbus Clippers played on Monday in Rochester, N.Y. after winding up their series with the Iowa Cubs at Huntington Park Sunday. In between, there was a six-hour bus trip, which may have put a damper on the Clippers’ offense. They managed just four hits against the Red Wings in a 4-1 loss.
The Columbus run came in the second inning when Chase DeLauter led off the frame with his first home run of the season. In his three games with the Clippers after being on the Injured List to start the season, DeLauter is 3-for-10 with a double and a homer.
The Clippers had three innings with a runner at second base but were unable to move any of them further. The Red Wings scored two runs in the fourth and eighth innings to nail down the victory. Columbus starter Vince Velasquez (1-1) suffered his first loss of the season, going four innings and allowing two runs on six hits.
The teams get Tuesday off, then resume their six-game series with a game Wednesday beginning at 11:05 a.m. Parker Messick (3-1, 2.95) will take the hill for the Clippers and face Cade Cavalli (1-1, 6.59).
