The Columbus Clippers and Indianapolis Indians were two outs into the bottom of the first inning and the rains came in Central Indiana. When play resumed more than two hours later, both teams had new pitchers on the mound.
Will Dion had started for the Clippers, Nick Dombkowski for the Indians. Neither had allowed a run in the opening frame. They gave way to Connor Gillispie and Fineas Del-Bonta Smith. Both would end the day being the pitchers of record as Columbus took a big lead and held on for a 6-5 win.
The Clippers put together a 6-0 lead through the first six innings. José Tena hit a two-run blast in the third inning, his 16th home run of the season. Columbus added three unearned runs in the fifth on an error, a sacrifice fly, and a single.
In the top of the sixth, Clippers catcher Zac Fascia, newly-called up from the Lake County Captains, hit his first Triple-A home run, which was also his first Triple-A hit. Previously, he had only one at-bat for Columbus and that was in 2022.
Indianapolis plated four in the bottom of the seventh on a home run from Henry Davis to lead off the inning. Four doubles later, the Indians had cut the lead to 6-4. All of the runs came off reliever Andrew Misiaszek, who was making his first appearance for the Clippers this season.
That lead held into the bottom of the ninth. Reliever Anthony Gose took the mound for Columbus. With one out, he gave up a solo home run to Matt Gorki, but got two ground ball outs after that to earn his eighth save of the season.
Gillispie (3-7) picked up the win for the Clippers, going 5.1 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and striking out five. Del-Bonta Smith (1-1) was charged with the loss. Tanner Burns tossed a shutout inning for the Clips for his sixth hold of the season.
The Clippers get a four-day break in the schedule before heading to Louisville for a three-game series beginning Thursday.
