The Columbus Clippers have not lost games two days in a row yet this season. After falling to Louisville Thursday, the Clips kept that streak alive with a big 13-2 victory over the Bats at Huntington Park Friday.
The Columbus offense got going in the second inning when shortstop Milan Tolentino hit a solo home run, his first long ball of the campaign. The Clippers took control of the game with five runs in the third, taking advantage of two Louisville errors.
The second error allowed a run to cross. Then later in the inning, Kody Huff hit a grand slam, his first Triple-A home run. The Clippers added two runs in the fifth on a lead-off homer from Will Wilson, his team-leading fifth. Christian Cairo knocked in a run with a single before the end of the frame and the Clips led 8-0.
The Bats scored their two runs in the top of the sixth innings. Rece Hinds doubled to drive in runners from second and third. Columbus answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Johnathan Rodriguez collected an RBI with a single, Huff walked with the bases loaded, and Cairo was hit with a pitch forcing in a run.
The Clippers finished off their scoring in the bottom of the eighth. Huff posted another RBI with a double, then Kyle Datres singled to bring Huff home. On the day, Columbus put together 13 hits, five walks, and a hit batter.
The Clippers’ pitching staff bounced back after giving up nine runs the day before. Ryan Webb (1-1) earned the win, going 5.1 innings to start the game. He allowed two runs on two hits and two walks, and struck out six.
Luis Frías, Cody Bolton, and Cody Mikolajchak did not give up a run in their collective 3.2 innings of relief work and allowed only one hit. Neither Bolton nor Mikolajchak have given up a run yet this season.
The teams will go back at it in the fifth game of their six-game series Saturday beginning at 4:05 p.m.
