In order to win Tuesday, the Columbus Clippers needed to score runs, late and often. After falling behind to the Gwinnett Stripers 6-3 after four innings in the Atlanta suburbs, the Clippers took a lead in the seventh and hung on for an 11-10 victory.
Looking at the score alone does not tell the whole story. Of the ten runs allowed by Columbus pitching, only four were earned. The Clippers committed five errors on the night – three on infield throws, one on an outfield play, and one on a pickoff attempt.
The Columbus hitters had a great night. Leadoff hitter Chase DeLauter, in just his fifth Triple-A game, had three doubles and knocked in three runs. He’s hitting .316 as a Clipper. Raynel Delgado also had three RBIs, while Johnathan Rodriguez knocked in two runs on three hits, including his team-leading 20th home run.
Despite allowing the Stripers to tie the game 9-9 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Clippers’ reliever Andrew Misiaszek (2-0) picked up the win as Columbus retook the lead with two runs in the ninth. The loss went to Domingo Gonzalez (1-2).
Columbus and Gwinnett are back at it Wednesday with the second of their scheduled six-game series. The first pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. Triston McKenzie (2-3) will be on the bump for the Clippers, Ian Anderson (2-1) for the Stripers.
