Five games into his rehab assignment with the Columbus Clippers, Lane Thomas had three hits, including this home run, in the Clippers’ 9-6 win at Omaha Sunday.
The Columbus Clippers looked to put a couple of victories together to end their two-week road trip Sunday in Omaha. After beating the Storm Chasers Saturday, the Clippers won 9-6 Sunday afternoon. Lane Thomas propelled the offense with three hits, including a home run, on his rehab assignment from the Cleveland Guardians.
Unlike Saturday’s contest, where Columbus posted a big lead and held on for the win, the Clippers found themselves behind 4-1 Sunday going to the fourth inning. Their first run came in the first inning on Thomas’s lead-off shot. Omaha’s four runs, one in the second inning and three in the third, came off Columbus starter Ryan Webb.
The Clippers put together eight runs from the fourth through the seventh innings. Omaha starter Chandler Champlain and reliever Noah Murdock (0-1), who took the loss, gave up the nine scores. It was Murdock’s second game with the Storm Chasers after appearing in 13 contests for the Athletics (no city affiliation this season).
In addition to Thomas’s performance, the Clippers’ offensive attack saw C.J. Kayfus hit his second home run of the campaign and drive in two runs. Kody Huff had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Brayan Rocchio knocked in two with a double and Milan Tolentino added a run batted in run on two hits.
Columbus reliever Mason Hickman (1-0) allowed two runs in the fifth inning, but pitched well enough in his 2.2 innings of work to pick up his first win of the season. Parker Mushinski tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief and Nic Enright got the final two outs of the game and earned his first save.
The Clippers return home to face the Iowa Cubs in a six-game series beginning Tuesday at Huntington Park. The series will feature early afternoon contests on Wednesday and Thursday. the first pitch Tuesday is set for 7:05 p.m. Doug Nikhazy (1-3, 4,99) will get the start for the Clips.
