The Columbus Clippers have played two games in three days at Rochester’s Innovative Field and have been able to score just one run on a total of seven hits. After Monday’s 4-1 loss to the Red Wings, the Clippers were blanked 5-0 Wednesday in a game that started at 11:00 a.m.

The Clippers had scoring chances in the first two innings Wednesday. They loaded the bases in the top of the first inning with no outs, but Rochester starter Cade Cavalli, a former first round pick, struck out the next three batters. In the second, Columbus had a runner at third and one out, and couldn’t bring him home.

David Fry, who began a rehab stint with the club Monday, had one of the Clippers’ three hits on the day. Fry is recovering from elbow surgery. He was injured while playing with Cleveland last July on an awkward throw. He stayed in the lineup for the rest of the season, hitting a walk-off homer against the Yankees in the ALCS.

Will Dion (2-5) got the start for Columbus, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits in his 5.2 innings of work and took the loss. He struck out six Rochester batters. After giving up two runs in the seventh inning and getting two outs, reliever Luis Frías left the game with an unknown injury, Parker Mushinski finished the contest for the Clips without allowing a hit.

Cavelli (2-1) picked up the win for the Red Wings, going five scoreless innings. His curve ball was the most effective part of his repertoire, allowing him to escape the Clippers’ early-inning threats. Cavelli and the Rochester bullpen stymied the Columbus bats all day, recording 14 strikeouts.

The two squads will be back at it Thursday with a game beginning at 6:45 p.m. Aaron Davenport (0-0, 27.00) gets his second Triple-A start after a tough debut last week against Iowa. Seth Shuman (1-2, 4.88) will take the hill for the Red Wings.
