Going into their doubleheader Friday, the Columbus Clippers and Indianapolis Indians had only been able to complete one of the three games scheduled so far this week. The Clippers won Wednesday, 3-1, but games Tuesday and Thursday were washed out.
On Friday, two seven-inning contests were scheduled. The Indians evened the series with a 5-2 victory in the opener. The Clippers came back in the second game, winning 8-2.
In the first game, Indianapolis led 4-0 after two innings against Columbus starter Triston McKenzie (0-1), who suffered the loss in his first decision for the Clippers this season. The Clippers cut the Indians’ lead in half in the fifth inning when Raynel Delgado blasted his fifth home run of the campaign.
The Indians tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth for the 5-2 victory. Veteran Domingo Germán (4-4) went six innings, allowing only five hits and striking out seven, and earned the win. Ben Heller threw a perfect seventh inning and picked up his second save of the season.
In the second game, Jonathan Rodriguez got the scoring started early for Columbus when he doubled in the first inning to drive in two runs. The Clippers added two more in the fifth inning when Delgado hit his second home run of the night.
In the seventh inning, the Clippers recorded four more runs. Rodriguez added two RBIs to his count when he hit one over the right field wall. He now has 15 home runs and 55 runs batted this season. Catcher Dom Nuñez then hit a two-run homer to round out the Columbus scoring.
Starter Joey Castillo (1-2) pitched well for the Clips and picked up his first win of the season. In his five innings of work, he allowed only one run on six hits and struck out six. Luis Cessa (3-4) started for Indianapolis and took the loss.
The Clippers and Indians are right back at it Saturday, playing just one game, with the first pitch at Victory Field scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
