The Columbus Clippers and Worcester Red Sox were rained out Tuesday in Massachusetts in the first game of their scheduled six-game series. The game was rescheduled as part of a doubleheader Wednesday, to be made up of two seven-inning contests.
In the opener, the Clippers found themselves behind 5-2 going to the top of the seventh. The first two batters struck out. After that, the Red Sox bullpen issued two walks, then hit a batter to load the bases. Will Brennan was up nesxt and drove a pitch over the center field wall to put Columbus up, 6-5.
Tanner Burns (2-0) picked up the win, tossing the final two innings for the Clippers. He kept Worcester off the scoreboard, allowing just one hit and striking out three. Relievers Bradley Hanner and Andrew Walters threw a combined 1.2 scoreless innings.
Game two was a see-saw battle that saw Columbus take a 3-2 lead after five innings. In the sixth, Worcester scored twice to take the lead. In the top of the seventh, the Clippers tied the game when, with two outs, Kody Huff doubled to drive in Will Wilson. Wilson, who homered in the first game, had three RBIs in the nightcap.
The Red Sox put together some late inning excitement to return the favor in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs and the bases loaded, Tyler McDonough singled to drive in the winning run. Parker Mushinski (1-1) took the loss, just his first in four relief appearances.
The teams play the third game of their series Thursday with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at Polar Park.
