Rain, rain, go away. The game between Columbus and Syracuse Thursday was cut short because of the weather and Friday’s game was lost completely. That meant that Huntington Park would be the setting for a doubleheader Saturday evening.
The Clippers have been hot after the International League’s mid-season break, winning nine of twelve games. In their current series with the Mets, the team with the IL East’s best overall record, the Clips were up two games to one going into Saturday’s action.
The torrid pace continued for Columbus with a twin bill sweep of Syracuse Saturday, 7-1 and 3-0. Timely hitting, good defense, and outstanding pitching highlighted strong performances by the Clippers against a good Mets’ club.
In the first game, Alex Cobb started on the mound for Columbus in a rehab assignment. Cobb was traded by the San Francisco Giants to the Cleveland Guardians on June 30 for pitcher Jacob Bresnahan and a player to be named. It was his first action in 2024 as he was coming off shoulder inflammation suffered at the beginning of this season. Additionally, he had hip surgery in the off-season.
Cobb did not figure into the decision but had a solid outing, going 4.2 innings and giving up just one run on three hits and two walks, while striking out five. Andrew Walters (1-0) threw 1.1 innings of scoreless relief and earned his first win of the season.
In the first game, all seven Clippers runs came in the third inning of the seven-inning affair, highlighted by Raynel Delgado’s eighth home run of the campaign. Gabriel Arias, George Valera, Myles Straw, and Estevan Florial also knocked in runs for Columbus.
The second game featured another strong start on the bump for the Clippers. Triston McKenzie (2-1) earned the win, working six innings without allowing a run. He gave up four hits, walked three, and struck out 11 Mets. Pete Strzelecki retired the last batter of the game and picked up his eighth save.
Arias led the Columbus offense in the second game, knocking in two of the Clippers’ three runs on two hits. Will Brennan knocked in the other run for the Clips. Since arriving in Columbus from Cleveland this week, Brennan is hitting .471 and has driven in five runs in the lead-off spot.
The Clippers and Mets conclude their six-game series with a game Sunday at Huntington Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
