With the series tied at 1-1, the Columbus Clippers and Toledo Mud Hens played their third straight night game at Fifth Third Field Wednesday. Columbus won 5-3 on Monday, while the Mud Hens responded with a 5-2 victory Tuesday. The Clippers, with solid pitching and timely hitting, came away with a 4-2 win.
The Clippers got on the board first when Micah Pries singled in the second inning to drive in Myles Straw, who had tripled to get into scoring position. Columbus added two more runs in the fifth. Juan Brito doubled to add his 50th and 51st runs batted in of the season.
Toledo got within a run when pinch hitter Stephen Scott hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning, his first Triple-A roundtripper. Clipper reliever Peter Strzelecki shut the Mud Hens down in the eighth to maintain Columbus’s one-run lead.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Clips added to their lead when Brito hit his third double of the contest and drove in Angel Martínez on a close play at the plate. Martínez was initially called out by home plate umpire Matt Winter but Winter did not see that catcher Dillon Dingler was unable to hold on to the baseball.
Anthony Gose tossed a perfect ninth for Columbus and earned his sixth save of the season. Gose also saved Monday night’s game. Clippers starter Doug Nikhazy threw four scoreless innings but did not factor into the decision. Hunter Stanley (2-1) earned the victory in relief. Toledo starter Matt Manning (2-3) was charged with the loss.
Both teams travel to Columbus for a three-game series beginning at Huntington Park Thursday, with games Friday and Saturday. Thursday’s game gets underway at 4:05pm.
