After falling to the Toledo Mud Hens in the ninth inning Thursday, the Columbus Clippers returned the favor when José Tena hit a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth Friday for a 4-3 victory.

The Mud Hens took a 3-0 lead after scoring single runs in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings off Columbus starter Triston McKenzie. McKenzie was appearing in his first Triple-A game of the season after being optioned to the Clippers by Cleveland. He had started 16 games for the Guardians this season and had a 5.11 ERA.

McKenzie did not figure into the decision, however, as Columbus came back to tie the score with one run in the sixth and two in the seventh. Bryan Lavastida had an RBI single in the sixth, while the Clippers cobbled together two runs in the seventh on a Juan Brito sacrifice fly and a Kyle Manzardo ground out.

Toledo reliever Sean Guenther (3-1) came into the ballgame in the ninth inning. So, far this season Guenther had appeared in 27 games with 36 strikeouts and an ERA under 3.00. He struck out the first two hitters he faced, then Tena pulled one over the right field wall for the win, Guenther’s first loss of the campaign.

Anthony Gose (4-4) picked up the win, pitching a scoreless ninth inning. Earlier in the week at Toledo, Gose earned two saves. In addition,, neither Nick Mikolajchak nor Tanner Burns allowed a run in their relief work for the Clippers Friday.

Columbus and Toledo finish off their home and home six-game series Saturday with an afternoon game. The first pitched is slated for 5:05 p.m. It will be a busy night in the Arena District, as the Columbus Crew hosts Toronto at Lower.com Field later in the evening.
