As they did in Tuesday night’s 2-1 extra-inning victory over the Indianapolis Indians at Huntington Park, the Columbus Clippers’ pitching staff allowed only one run in their afternoon game against the Indians. The offense put together a balanced effort to beat Indianapolis, 5-1.
Logan Allen started for Columbus and gave up only a single run on a solo home run, one of only three hits he allowed in his 5.1 innings of work. He did not figure into the decision because the Clippers did not take the lead for good until the sixth inning.
For the second straight game, the Columbus bullpen did not allow a run. Zak Kent (2-0) picked up the win, going 1.1 innings. He was followed by Andrew Misiaszek, who went 1.1 innings, and Peter Strzelecki, who worked the ninth.
The Clippers’ offense got a run on the board in the second inning when George Valera hit his 12th home run of the season. The Indians tied the game in the third with a solo homer from Jack Suwinski.
Columbus put the game away with two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, Gabriel Arias hit his third home run of the season. Kyle Manzardo scored ahead of him after being hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. In the seventh inning, Columbus scored on two RBI doubles, first from Angel Martínez, then from Manzardo.
All told, the Clippers knocked out nine hits on the afternoon. The Columbus defense helped their pitchers with three double plays. The loss went to Indianapolis reliever Michael Plassmeyer (3-9), who gave up four of the Clippers’ five runs.
The teams will play the third game of their six-game series Thursday night at Huntington Park. Will Dion (4-3) will be on the bump for the Clippers facing Bubba Chandler (1-0) for the Indians. The first pitch is set for 6:15 p.m.
