It has been a less than ideal week for the Columbus Clippers. After returning home from a road trip to Lehigh Valley, where they lost five of six, the Clips have faced a rainy six days in Central Ohio. Through Saturday, they had won just one game out of four and lost two games to the weather. On Sunday at Huntington Park, they fell to St. Paul 3-2 in ten innings.
Columbus took a 2-0 lead after scoring single runs in the second and third innings. In the second, Petey Halpin singled with two outs to bring in Kody Huff from third base. In the third, Will Brennan led off the frame with his third home run of the season. It was his 17th run batted in.
The Saints responded with a run in the fifth and a run in the sixth. Just called up from the Fort Myers Might Mussels in the Single-A Florida League, Will Holland hit his first long ball for St. Paul in the fifth inning. The Saints tied the game when Mike Ford singled to plate Royce Lewis in the sixth.
There was no further scoring through nine innings, forcing extra frames. St. Paul’s Jeferson Morales brought a run home on a sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th. The Clippers could not score in the bottom of the inning and the Saints came away with a series-finale victory at Huntington Park.
Columbus once again got a quality start from left-hander Parker Messick, who allowed both St. Paul runs in 5.1 innings of work. He gave up only three hits and struck out nine. Nick Mikolajchak, Zak Kent, Nic Enright, and Bradley Hanner combined to shut down the Saints until they scored an unearned run in the 10th inning. Hanner (3-3) was charged with the loss.
The Clippers get a day off Monday, then make the short trip to Indianapolis to take on the Indians in a six-game series beginning Tuesday. The first pitch at Victory Field on Tuesday is set for 6:35 p.m. The Cleveland Guardians’ Slade Cecconi will get the start for Columbus is his second rehab appearance of the season.
