The Columbus Clippers won their second game in a row Wednesday to begin their series with the Toledo Mud Hens at Huntington Park. Columbus right-hander Aaron Davenport was effective in his third Triple-A start, giving up just one run in four innings, but did not figure into the decision in the team’s 5-2 victory.

Seven batters in the Clippers’ lineup had one hit each in the win. Five of the hits, however, went for extra bases, with Yordys Valdes and Jake Anchia each connecting for home runs. Petey Halpin and Brayan Rocchio doubled, while Christian Cairo posted his second triple of the season.

Johnathan Rodriguez continued to trigger the attack with two runs batted in Wednesday. Rodriguez leads Columbus with a .325 batting average and 31 RBIs, and is one of four Clippers atop the home runs list with six. He has been consistent in all three categories in his 44 games played so far this season.

After Davenport’s effort, the Columbus relief corps of Tanner Burns, Matt Krook, Bradley Hanner, and Zak Kent went the final five innings, allowing a run on five hits while striking out seven. Burns (3-0) picked up the win. Rochester starter Lael Lockhart (2-4) was charged with the loss.

The teams do battle in the third game of their six-game series Thursday with the first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m. Lefty Doug Nikhazy (2-3, 5.22) will start for the Clippers.
