The Columbus Crew found themselves up 2-1 after the first leg of their CONCACAF semifinal series with Monterrey after their match on Wednesday, April 24th at Lower.com Field. In the second leg in Monterrey May 1, the Crew put together a dominant 3-1 victory to move on to the series finals.

In Wednesday’s match, the club fell behind 1-0 in the 11′. Monterrey’s Maxi Meza’s chip shot from close range went over the head of Crew goaltender Patrick Schulte and hit the crossbar. It appeared that it would have come back into the box but the Crew’s Yevhen Cheberko was sprinting to defend the shot and his momentum carried him into the ball which bounced off him into the net.

The Crew were able to tie the match when Aidan Morris kept possession of the ball in traffic, then found himself in position to kick it past Monterrey keeper Esteban Andrada deep into first half extra time.

In the second half, the Crew scored twice. They grabbed the lead in the 49′ when Diego Rossi scored on a pass from Alex MÇŽtan. MÇŽtan had been substituted into the match at the beginning of the half.

As he did in the first leg match, Jacen Russell-Rowe completed the scoring for the Crew late in the contest with a left-side kick from distance past a charging Andrada.

The Crew’s 3-1 victory put them ahead in the two-game series 5-2 in the aggregate and qualified them to go to the finals to face Liga MX’s CF Pachuca on June 2. The match will take place at Estadio Hidalgo, Pachuca’s home venue. It’s the first time that the Crew have appeared in the CONCACAF finals.
