The Columbus Crew were without a number of their marquee players Tuesday in their Concacaf quarterfinal match with Tigres UANL at Lower.com Field, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Christian Ramirez and Sean Zawadzki were out with injuries, while leading scorer Cucho Hernández missed his second game because of “team policy”.
The beginning of the match was delayed two hours because of thunder storms that crossed through Central Ohio. Despite Columbus controlling the action in the first half, Tigres scored first on a counter-attack ending with a header from André-Pierre Gignac in the 18th minute.
Diego Rossi scored the equalizer, his first goal of the season, with two minutes left in the first half. The second half did not yield any further scoring by either side, despite the Crew playing shorthanded after Aidan Morris was assessed with his second foul in the 77th minute.
The Crew will play Tigres in the second leg of their quarterfinal series at Estadio Universitario in Nuevo Leon, Mexico on April 9 with the winner heading to the Concacaf semifinals.
