The Columbus Crew (4-0-3) came into Saturday’s match with visiting CF Montréal (0-5-2) having not lost yet in this MLS regular season. The Crew stayed undefeated downing Montréal at Lower.com Field, 2-1.
Montréal came into the match having not won yet this season. Le CFM fired head coach Laurent Courtois after five matches and replaced him with interim coach Marco Donadel. Since the change, Montréal is 0-1-1.
In Saturday’s contest, the Black & Gold took a 2-0 lead into the locker room at the half. In the 11th minute, Aziel Jackson scored the Crew’s first goal off a long pass from Jacen Russell-Rowe that AZ hit off the right post and into the net.
Russell-Rowe scored in the 26th minute on a shot just inside box that he elevated past Montréal goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois. The assist went to Steven Moreira on a nifty turn and leading pass to Russell-Rowe inside the Montréal zone.
Montréal scored in the 52nd minute when Prince Owusu chipped in a rebound off a Caden Clark shot that hit the post. The goal was originally waved off for an offsides violation. Upon review, the call was reversed and the goal allowed to stand.
With the victory, the Crew moved into the top spot in the MLS’s Eastern Conference. The other undefeated team in the East is Inter Miami who have two matches in hand against the Crew. The Herons host Toronto Sunday night at Chase Stadium.
The Crew play at St. Louis City FC on Sunday, April 13 beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Crew’s match against Inter Miami the following Saturday will be played at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland with a 4:30 p.m. start time.
