The Columbus Crew opened their home slate Saturday at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field with a 0-0 draw with Chicago Fire FC. It was the second straight draw for the Black & Gold after a 2-2 decision at Kansas City the week before. The Crew are still looking for their first win of the season in three outings.
Captain Sean Zawadzki summed things up, “Looking at the game, it’s always, always frustrating when you don’t walk away with three points at home, but looking at the bright side of things, we didn’t concede a goal.”
First one of those at home, it’s even more special. Now it’s how can we turn that into creating even more chances and scoring goals, putting the end product to it and giving the fans that joy that they get to experience.”
Columbus did have opportunities to score, outshooting the Fire 6-1 in the first half, 13-8 overall. The Crew also had more corner kicks, 7-3.
The play of the game may have been reserved for the final seconds of the match when Crew goalkeeper Patrick Schulte made a stop on a breakaway by Chicago’s Mbekezeli Mbokazi. Schulte finished the evening with his first clean sheet of the young season, the 21st of his career.
Columbus remains at home for their next match, playing Nashville SC next Saturday at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field beginning at 7:30 p.m.
