Both the Columbus Clippers and Durham Bulls had to travel and play without an off day as they started their six-game series at Huntington Park Monday. The Labor Day holiday did not allow the clubs to take their usual day off on Monday. The Bulls were able to adjust and came away with a 5-1 win.
Durham didn’t waste any time, scoring two runs in the first inning with a walk, a double, and a single. Each team scored a run in the fourth inning. Heriberto Hernandez hit a home run for Durham and George Valera knocked in the Clippers’ only run with a sacrifice fly.
The Bulls added two unearned runs in the top of the ninth to seal the victory. Both starters were the pitchers of record. Durham’s Logan Workman (1-0) picked up his first Triple-A win, while Logan Allen (3-2) was charged with the loss.
Columbus and Durham are back at it Tuesday with game two of the series beginning at 6:15 p.m. Triston McKenzie (3-3) will take the mound for the Clippers and will face the Bulls’ Ian Seymour (2-1).
