Both the Bishop Watterson Eagles and the Wooster Generals were first-timers in the boys lacrosse championship game Sunday at Historic Crew Stadium. The Eagles came into the contest with six losses this season, half of them to Division I teams. Wooster had only two losses on their sheet before Sunday.
Watterson took off in the first quarter, scoring four of the first five goals. Drew Dunlap found the net twice, while Luke Ishmael and Will Harris each scored once. Dunlap would lead the Eagles with four goals when all was said and done, while Ishmael would add three assists to his first-quarter goal.
Each squad scored twice in the second frame, giving Watterson a 6-3 lead going to the break. Wooster then got to within a goal, scoring twice in the third and keeping the Eagles off the board. Watterson went back to work in the fourth, scoring the first two goals and then holding on for a 9-7 win and their first OHSAA lacrosse crown.
The victory caps an impressive year for Watterson. The Eagles’ football team won the Division III title, beating Toledo Central Catholic for the school’s fifth championship. The girls soccer team won its first state championship on penalty kicks this past fall and the boys wrestling squad won its first OHSAA team crown in March.
The girls lacrosse team is a past state champion, winning a title in 2023.
