Jet Greaves made 29 saves for the fifth shutout of his NHL career and Kent Johnson scored the only goal of the game Saturday night in the Columbus Blue Jackets’ 1-0 win over the New York Rangers.

Both teams had reason to be pleased with their defensive efforts after entering the game looking to bounce back from lopsided losses. The Rangers were coming off a 7-1 defeat to the New Jersey Devils on Thursday, while the Blue Jackets gave up seven goals of their own in a 7-3 loss to the Florida Panthers on Tuesday.

Blue Jackets head coach Rick Bowness, who publicly criticized his team after the loss to the Panthers, gave the team full credit for their effort Saturday.

“That’s the best 60-minute effort we put, or whatever, 63 or whatever it was. That’s the best game we put together all year for sure,” Bowness said.

“Everyone, to me, played their best game of the year tonight. We needed it, and we got it.”

Greaves made nine saves in the first before notching ten saves in each of the last two periods. The Rangers were held without a shot in the overtime period.

The Blue Jackets, meanwhile, found the back of the net on their third shot of the five-minute sudden death. It started with a great sequence in the neutral zone from veteran Charlie Coyle, who threw the puck into the offensive zone and made a spectacular individual effort to get it back.

He then made another strong effort to push through the Rangers defense, setting up Zach Werenski near the high slot. Werenski passed on the shot and instead found Johnson, who then fired it past New York goalie Dylan Garand for the game-winner.

“Charlie made a good play and I was hoping it’d come back to me, and Z (Werenski) was so smart. He found me there and put perfect weight on the pass, like right in the wheelhouse,” Johnson said. “Luckily I hit a good spot.”

QUICK THOUGHTS: No game is a must-win in October, but the Blue Jackets really needed this one. They had allowed 12 goals in their last five periods of hockey, including the loss Tuesday night.

This was not only their best defensive effort of the season, but the best game of the young season from Greaves as well. The Rangers had a dozen high-danger chances and should have taken the lead several times, and Jet was up for the challenge throughout the night.

Offensively, Johnson is the Team MVP through a half-dozen games. The overtime winner was his fourth goal of the season, giving him the team lead and putting him more than halfway to last season’s total of seven goals in 76 games.

Bowness said after the game that Johnson’s confidence has been a big reason for that. “He’s a far more confident kid and I think the confidence comes from (his being) a lot stronger,” Bowness said. Johnson worked to put on weight and muscle this summer after losing weight last offseason. So far, so great.

NEXT UP: Columbus’ second back-to-back of the season concludes Sunday night when they face off against the Minnesota Wild in St. Paul. The Wild have won three of their last four and are coming off two days’ rest. Puck-drop is set for 6:00 p.m.
