On Tuesday, the Columbus Blue Jackets wound up their third multi-game road trip in just over a month. Since Nov. 2, the Jackets have played 13 games away from Columbus while playing just six games at Nationwide Arena. Their latest sojourn of three contests ended in three defeats, including Tuesday’s 4-1 loss to Carolina.
The game against the Hurricanes was the Blue Jackets’ third in four days. On Saturday, they let a three-goal lead, one of three leads on the afternoon, slip away at Florida in a 7-6 overtime loss. The next day, the Jackets fell 2-0, wasting an outstanding performance by goaltender Jet Greaves, who stopped 36 of 37 shots.
At the Lenovo Center in Raleigh, N.C. Tuesday night, Columbus took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission after Dmitri Voronkov scored on a power play, tipping in a pass to the back post from Sean Monahan. The Hurricanes scored a goal in the middle frame to tie the game at 1-1, then three goals in the third to seal the win.
“We gotta capitalize,” said Adam Fantilli after the game about Columbus’s opportunities to score. “One goal’s not good enough. Jet’s playing phenominal and we’re just not capitalizing. I’m pointing the finger at myself first. It’s actually embarrassing.”
Head coach Dean Evason added, “We’ve got to shoot more pucks and simplify our game a little bit. We tried to get cute on some occasions. Tried to get right in front of the net as opposed to just shooting (and) looking for second, third opportunities.”
The Blue Jackets return home for four straight games beginning with the Ottawa Senators Thursday. The puck drops at Nationwide Arena at 7:00 p.m.
